How To Become a Better Driver

Avoiding Auto Accidents

The best way to ensure that you get the best rates on auto insurance is to have a clean driving record.  Here are some tips on becoming a better driver:

  • Concentrate on driving.  If you must talk on a cell phone, try to get a hands free set, and one that uses voice dial so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road when you make a call.  Other common driving distrations you should avoid if possible are eathing, monkeying with the car's radio or CD player/changer, and, believe it or not, reading.
  • Impairments such as alcohol, and drugs.
  • Don't drive if you haven't had proper rest.  This is one of the leading contributors to motor vehicle fatalities.
  • Be extremely careful when driving through intersections.  This is where most accidents happen.
  • Keep your car properly maintained--tire pressure, oil, mechanical integrity, etc.  Poorly maintained cars are involved in far more accidents than ones that aren't.
  • Drive defensively.  This means drive with a sense of anticipation that other driver's will make plenty of mistakes.  Don't assume that you are seen, and imagine that other driver's generally drive somewhat aggressively.
  • Be aware of road conditions and drive appropriately.  If is raining or snowing, slow down!

Good drivers pay much less for their auto insurance than those who have been involved in one or more motor vehicle accidents.
